Our FACILITY at the North Central Missouri YMCA

The doors to our new facility opened for business on November 23, 2003, at 1140 West Helm, Brookfield , MO . The dream began in 1996. With the help of the Grand River Area Family YMCA in Chillicothe, we raised over two million dollars through generous local donations and grant awards from the NAP and the Maybee Foundation. Over 100 volunteers combined with a cooperative effort to build our dream, which is now a reality. Our facility consists of 28,000 square feet in two levels. The walking track circles the basketball court overhead, so you can watch the action down below. Our exercise equipment and weight room are located on the second floor also. Since the Grand River Area Family YMCA in Chillicothe has an indoor pool, our members use their pool. Several of our members car pool over the short 25 miles to Chillicothe to participate in aquatic classes there. As you can see from the photos of our facility below, our YMCA provides state-of-the-art, modern facilities to enhance your exercise and fitness regimen, as well as your social enjoyment! When you enter through the front door from our large, paved parking lot, you are greeted by our friendly staff at the front desk. Just take a moment to sign in. If you are not currently a member, please ask someone from our staff to take you on a tour of our facility. You'll be impressed by the size and cleanliness of our facility, and the bright colors will help put a smile on your face. As you walk around, you'll see groups of friends who might be taking a break from their activity, or maybe they've just stopped by to visit awhile. The Dream Becomes a Reality...

During an early morning meeting of the newly formed, Brookfield Community Development Committee, the discussion again centered on the dream the group had been envisioning for some time, a youth center. It was time to take action; a decision was make to further explore the possibility of that type of a project here in Brookfield. Letters were sent and phone calls placed, to the National YMCA and the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of America, to find out how they originated and hopefully get some ideas for the group.

The ball finally got rolling on February 12, 1996 when 22 individuals meet with the director of the Grand River Area Family YMCA in Chillicothe. First a temporary home was set up, followed by a storefront facility, which would remain the home of the YMCA until a new facility could be built. With over two million dollars raised through generous local donations and grant awards from the NAP and the Maybee Foundation, along with the help of 100 plus volunteer’s ranging in age from 10 to 80 – clocking in untold hours planning, raising money and just plain old hard work – the North Central Missouri YMCA celebrated its grand opening. The dream had become a reality!

The doors to the new facility opened for business on the 23rd of November 2003, with great anticipation. As we brought in the New Year a dedication of the new building was held on January 11, 2004. Approximately 200 individuals were in attendance to hear the guest speakers and to marvel at what the Linn County area was able to accomplish. Before and after the dedication numerous tours were given and individuals who had never set foot in the YMCA made the commitment to join our family.

With the new facility the North Central Missouri YMCA was able to expand its program base by offering new fitness classes, and more youth programs. With its opening also came the realization of just how important the North Central Missouri YMCA is to the Linn County area. Since January 1st, 2004 we have seen the number of youth and families in need of financial assistance for memberships to YMCA triple. As of July 27th over 115 applications for assistance have tripled, and of that number 94% have been from single parent families. This statistic along with many others shows the YMCA mission in action “To put Christian principles into practice, through programs that build a healthy sprit, mind and body for all.

As the YMCA continues to grow, we will continue to meet the needs of the people of Linn County and the surrounding area. We look forward to the challenges and great things that lie ahead, and meeting the need of the people we serve. The YMCA is a place for everyone, and we continue to see that in the people and programs that we offer.
