Fitness-A Lifetime Investment
The YMCA respects and supports older adults at the Y. Our goal is to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults, and to encourage older adults to take advantage of the health and fitness programs offered at the Y. On Wednesday May 28 we invite everyone in the community 55 and older to come to the Y and try it out for the day.

We offer 2 classes for 55 and older, plus an indoor walking track, treadmills, bikes, and assorted weight machines.
We’ll be happy to show you around and answer any questions you have.

YMCA: BUILDING STRONG FAMILIES

Current health statistics clearly illustrate ‘why’ it’s so important for kids and adults alike to lead healthier lifestyles.
At the YMCA, we believe families that are strong play a critical role in ‘how’ to make it happen.

  • Families grow stronger and healthier by focusing goals on more than just adding minutes of exercise and cutting out unhealthy snacks.

  • Goals which balance, nurture and strengthen spirit, mind and body are the key to building healthier families for the long term. It’s really the ultimate exercise.

  • Studies confirm again and again the important role that family interaction and strengthening play in the long-term health and well being of its individual members.

  • Participating in family rituals that foster togetherness and communication is strongly linked to adolescent mental health. Teens who eat with their families most days have better grades and less depression and substance abuse than kids who frequently eat on their own.

  • University studies show that young kids and teens whom eat regularly with their families eat more fruits, vegetables, fiber and whole grains and consume less soda and snack food.

  • A 2004 YMCA of the USA study found that parents who received support from community organizations such as YMCAs reported positive experiences for their children, saying the programs enabled their children to engage with other kids, provided positive influence and offered role models.

The North Central Missouri YMCA encourages families to develop
New Year’s resolutions built upon a foundation of family connection...

BACKGROUND

  • Each year, millions of Americans tackle the annual ritual of making New Year’s resolutions. Eat better, exercise more, lose weight, and quit smoking— these are among the perennial favorites. Some will succeed, some will stumble. What is the secret to New Year’s resolution success? Not going it alone!
  • This year, The North Central Missouri YMCA is encouraging families to put a new twist on an old custom and make resolutions for 2007 together as a family. We have worked for more than 150 years to build strong families, and everyday, see first hand the power of a supportive community and family in achieving goals.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Making a commitment to a healthier lifestyle is more important now than ever and that doing it together as a family or supportive group greatly improves success. Supporting data may be alarming, but a turning of the tides is possible:
  • Our nation is facing a dramatic lifestyle health crisis. Sixty million adults – about 30 percent of the U.S. adult population – and nine million children are obese or overweight; 16 percent of our children have Type II diabetes. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the current generation of American children could be the first to lead shorter lives than their parents.
  • But even small changes can make a major impact. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that participating in moderate physical activity, such as walking for 30 minutes at least five times a week substantially lowered the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.
  • Introducing healthy habits early can have a lifetime benefit. Children who develop healthy exercise and eating habits while they are young are more likely to continue to lead healthy lifestyles through adulthood.

MEET ELLA

Ella

Ella Caldwell is the oldest member of the North Central Missouri YMCA. In November 2005 she turned 95 years young. Ella joined the YMCA in April of 1998 and has been an active participant ever since. She participates in the Forever Fit class every Monday-Wednesday-Friday and has since its start in September 1998, and has rarely missed a class. She contributes her good health to exercise and mustard (she eats mustard on her pancakes) and also to the good friends she has made at the YMCA. She has said many times she doesn’t know if she would even be here without the social and health aspects of the YMCA. Ella is a joy and inspiration to all who know her.

Partners with Youth

Meeting the needs of the Linn County Area, the YMCA provides quality programming for people of all ages, races, and religions. Guided by the principles of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, YMCA activities enrich the physical, social, and spiritual well-being of our children, families, and community.

Helping so many people would not be possible without the YMCA Annual Partners with Youth Campaign for Financial Assistance, which provides scholarships to individuals and families in need. Imagine the possibilities...

  • $25 would provide the opportunity for a child to participate in a YMCA sports program that could not afford to.
  • $75 will give a child, who would otherwise have no place to go a year membership to the YMCA
  • $100 would help a needy family join the YMCA and have an opportunity for a healthy lifestyle that they would otherwise not have.
